The Four Pillars of the National Honor Society

The Members of the Sparrows Point High School chapter of the National Honor Society are an elite group of individuals dedicated to the four pillars of NHS:

· Scholarship – Scholarship is more than a report card; it represents a dedicated commitment to lifelong learning. It’s about optimizing the educational opportunities offered and pursuing knowledge within and beyond academic confines. Scholarship necessitates a consistent effort, with an aspiration to contribute positively to the world through one’s own knowledge, skills, and experiences.

o Our Members are committed to maintaining a 3.3 GPA/4.0 QPA throughout their high school careers.

· Service – Service represents the choice of stepping outside oneself to meet the needs of others, fueled by an unwavering passion for a cause, heartfelt empathy for others, or driven by personal circumstances. It’s about performing selfless acts that transcend the ordinary, engendering transformative changes that resonate through our schools, ripple across our communities, and reverberate on a global scale. In the noble act of service, we sculpt a better world with our hands, our hearts, and our humanity.

o Our Members regularly participate in service projects to benefit the students of our school and the other members of our Sparrows Point Community.

o The SPHS Chapter of the NHS participates regularly in the collection and donation of goods for the surrounding community. Common projects include the collection of non-perishable food items; winter coats, hats, and gloves; pet supplies such as blankets and toys; and children’s books.

· Leadership – Leadership is more than a position or title; it means embodying the spirit of initiative, innovation, and influence. It’s about inspiring peers through actions, nurturing a collaborative environment, and championing positive change. Student leaders embrace the responsibility of shaping their academic community, all while fostering personal growth and development. It’s an interplay of intellect, empathy, and resilience, guiding others while continually learning and evolving.

o Our Members lead the students of Sparrows Point High School through various initiatives throughout the school year. SPHS students look to our NHS Members to show respect, empathy, and a drive to help others succeed.

· Character – Character is the essence of who we are. It is about valuing diversity, building relationships grounded in empathy, and exhibiting qualities like perseverance, respect, integrity, and honesty. Character lies not in public acts of virtue or visible mistakes, but in the consistent commitment to ethical and compassionate decision-making that positively affects both oneself and others.

o Our Members in the Sparrows Point High School chapter of the National Honor Society participate in showcasing the growing diversity of our student body by creating and delivering presentations to the students of SPHS during morning announcements.

o Our NHS Members have created presentations that celebrate the following heritages/cultures:

§ Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage

§ Black History

§ Greek American Heritage

§ Irish American Heritage

§ Italian American Heritage

Logistics

The Application Process: Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors interested in joining the ranks of the National Honor Society must complete an application during the application window, which typically occurs during the months of November and December. Applications are reviewed by various members of the SPHS faculty and selections for admission are made in January or early February.

Students are notified in February and those accepted into NHS are invited to bring their families to our annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony that takes place in the Sparrows Point High School Auditorium in the beginning of March.

Responsibilities: Once a Member is accepted into the SPHS chapter of the National Honor Society, even before they are officially inducted, they are invited into our Schoology group. Additionally, they are expected to attend all NHS meetings that occur towards the end of each month before school and begin participating in our service and character projects.

Dues: The year that a student is inducted into the SPHS Chapter of the National Honor Society and each year they stay in NHS, Members are expected to pay NHS dues, in the amount of $20, using our Online School Payment (OSP) System. Dues go toward the paid NHS Membership of the school, our March Induction Ceremony, and the NHS Stoles that Members in good standing will receive for graduation.
